1. INTRODUCTION

Filmmaking, much like films themselves, encompasses lots of subgenres. Filmmakers can be TV producers, Instagram celebrities, or arthouse directors. Each school of filmmaking has its own practices, with some common filmmaking fundamentals found throughout. Youth Film Platform Africa has courses to help you master the whole spectrum.

3. PRODUCTION DESIGN

SummaryIn this unit the students will learn on every aspect of production design in film focusing on the 7 elements of design set, props, color, wardrobe, make-up, hairstyle and lighting designs. The training will be delivered on set with a lot of improvisational tools. The students will also learn the techniques of design through doing it on set.

5. ACTING

This unit will focus on training students on the many facets of acting for film for example, Techniques, methods of acting, improvising, performance etc. The students will be lucky to learn by having many opportunities to for films in the weekly competition. They will act in different capacities and with different directors thus have a wealth of experience in acting for film.



7. SOUND

This Unit will focus on training students on Sound design for a film focusing on key skills necessary including; Sound Recording, Lip sinking, sound effects, Foley, dialogue, music scoring among many others.

2. SCREEN WRITING

In this unit, students will learn how to write a professional screenplay. The processes of writing, re-writing, techniques of writing, cinematic language etc. We hope to deliver the training through real life training of the students on set. Objective To give students a real life writing experience by allowing them to write scripts for films selected for the weekly competition.

4. CINEMATOGRAPHY

In this unit, the students will learn how to tell visual stories through a camera. They will learn how to operate, use techniques, accessories, and set-up and adjust cameras for filming. How to build a relationship between the camera, techniques and story and create synergy.

6. EDITING

This Unit will focus on training students on various stages of Cinema Editing, familiarizing them with professional software’s and equipping with knowledge on compositing, picture cutting, file transfer, sound cutting, motion graphics and color grading.



8. DIRECTING

This Unit will focus on equipping directors with skills in Directing actors, camera, a shoot and editing process.

FILM BUSINESS

1. FILM APPRECIATION

This unit will focus on giving the students the film evaluation and analysis skills. Students are expected to analyze the technical and business making side of different greatest films of all times and make a detailed power point report. The students should then present their studies of the film to an audience.

3. FILM DISTRIBUTION

This unit will focus on the various methods of distribution including VOD platforms, theatres, etc. The students will also learn how to read reports on markets, acquisition strategies, international partnerships etc. This is an important subject that impacts greatly on how the students see the business of filmmaking.

5. FILM SERVICES

In this unit students will learn the business of providing film services to local and international filmmakers and advertisement agencies. How to provide for all services of film with no attachment to the creative making of a film. This is a multi-billion dollar industry which is not yet exploited in Africa.



7. SOUND

2. FILM PRODUCTION

This unit will focus on preparing students for the different levels of Film Production. Students will get to know the business and logistical aspects of film production delivered in hands on manner. The unit will cover the students crewing as different types of producers. Executive producer, Producer, Production Manager, Line Producer, Production assistant etc. The goal is to enable the learners to understand all the production roles from an experiential perspective.

4. FILM FINANCING

This course will focus on the growing avenues of film financing. Film Markets, Pitching competitions, Film Festivals, Grants, Venture capital, angel investments, studio financing etc. The students will get hands on skills in writing the business and financial plans, creating financial statements and books of accounts. Making the right decisions on which film financing source to go for etc.

6. AFRICA FILM INDUSTRY AND MARKETS

This unit will focus on equipping students with skills in all facets of the African Film Industry, from law, regulations, markets, associations, performance, copyrights, audiences etc. The unit will help paint a picture of Kenyan film industry against the world.



8. FILM DEVELOPMENT

This unit will focus on the important area of film development where an idea is born and ready to be converted into a screenplay and film. In this important stage students will learn how to write treatments, story outlines, budgets and put together small teams that are essential to pitching film.
